Castine, ME - After trailing by as many as 19 points, the Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team rallied to within four points late in Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference game at Maine Maritime Academy. The Hornets weren't able to complete the comeback, however, resulting in an 86–79 setback inside Smith Gymnasium.
Lyndon (5–8, 3–3 NAC) fell behind 19-4 seven and a half minutes into the contest and played from behind the rest of the way. The Hornets trimmed the led to single digits multiple times, but each time Maine Maritime (6-9, 6-2) answered, building their lead to 19 with a little more than ten minutes to go. At that point Lyndon began a big rally, and narrowed the gap to four points, 83-79, on Gregory Gonyea Jr's (Dolgeville, NY) three pointer with 29 seconds to go. That would be as close as the Hornets would get, as the Mariners held on for the win.
Gonyea paced Lyndon with a team-high 24 points. Senior forward Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) contributed ten points, while Owen Traynor (Rutland, VT) added nine points to bolster Lyndon's balanced scoring effort.
Maine Maritime was led by Marcus Schade, who poured in a game-high 27 points, and Drew Hamilton, who added 15 points.
After playing five of their first six NAC contests on the road, Lyndon comes home for a pair of games this weekend. The Hornets will host the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Then they host Husson University in another 1:00 pm tip on Sunday.
