Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nightmare second half does in Hornet men's basketball

Lyndonville, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon and the University of Maine at Presque Isle played to a standoff in the first half of Saturday's North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game.  After intermission the Hornets went cold, as UMPI pulled away for an 89-74 victory.  UMPI improved to 4-10 on the season and 3-5 in NAC play, while Lyndon fel to 5-9 on the season and 3-4 in conference.

After UMPI jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead, Lyndon responded and build a nine point advantage at 22-13 on an Xavier Rainwater (Frisco, TX) layup almost nine minutes in.  The Owls then chipped away, until they tied things at 26-26 following Doug McCalla'a jump shot almost four minutes later.  The teams were never separated by more than a possession the rest of the half and went into intermission tied at 45-45.  Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) scored 24 of his game high 33 points in the opening half.  McCalla had 13 first half points to pace the Owls.

Ahke McMichael took over in the second half for UMPI.  The Owls' leading scorer was held scoreless in the first half, but responded with 17 second half points as the Owls gradually pulled away.  The Hornets went ice cold, only connecting on eight of 27 shots (29.6%) and misfiring on all ten three-point attempts.  Lyndon also only made 13 of 29 free throw attempts.

McMichael's 17 led UMPI.  McCalla finished with 15 points while Joelle Hodge and Michael Brigman chipped in with ten points apiece.  Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) was Lyndon's only double figure scorer other than McIntyre, finishing with ten points.

Lyndon returns to action on Dunday afternoon when they host Husson University at 3:00 pm.
