Farmington, ME - The University of Maine at Farmington opened up a double digit lead at halftime and extended it to as many as 23 points before holding off a late Vermont State University Lyndon run to come away with a 94-83 North Atlantic Conference men's basketball victory on Monday afternoon. The Beavers improved to 10-3 overall and remain unbeaten in seven NAC starts. The Hornets fell to 5-7 on the season and 3-2 in conference.
UMF took a 41-31 lead into halftime and scored the first eight points of the second stanza to push their lead out to 18. Lyndon chipped away and cut the deficit to 12 at 59-47 on a Ty Bates (Hartwell, GA) putback basket with 12:15 to go. An 11-point Beaver run over the next three minutes built the UMF advantage to 23. Lyndon again battled back, and a Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) three-pointer with 2:06 to go cut the margin to single digits at 85-76. That would be as close as Lyndon would get, however, as the Beavers held on for the win.
Zach McLaughlin paces UMF with 24 points. Jason Reynolds notched a double double with 15 points and 19 rebounds and Charlie Houghton also tallied 15 points. Kory Donlin and Gabe Michaud also reached double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Gonyea led Lyndon with a game high 26 points and ten rebounds. Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) added 21 points and Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) recorded a double double with ten points and ten rebounds.
Lyndon returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, when they tip off at 1:00 pm at Maine Maritime Academy.
