Northampton, MA - The Vermont State University Lyndon volleyball team came up short in a pair of straight set losses at the Bonnie May Invitational, hosted by Smith College, on Saturday afternoon. Lyndon fell to Bridgewater State University and Dean College, and remains winless on the season. Bridgewater improved to 2-0, while Dean picked up their first win in four starts.
Match 1: Bridgewater State 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-9)
The Hornets opened the day with a tough outing against Bridgewater State. From the first serve, Lyndon struggled to match the Bears, with Bridgewater's balanced offense and aggressive serving overwhelming the Hornets.
Key contributors for Lyndon included Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) with two kills and two digs, Sydney Clunis (Windsor, ON) with a pair of digs, and Olivia Cordova (Craig, Co) with four assists.
On the Bridgewater side, the offense was led by the trio of Kim Gowell (8 kills), Lily Welch (7 kills), and Charlotte Sullivan (four kills and five aces). Natalie Fredriksen contributed nine assists and four aces, and Xin Ai Robinson chipped in with eight assists to orchestrate their potent attack.
Match 2: Dean College 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-10
Next, Lyndon took on Dean but again couldn't break through. The Hornets put up a stronger fight in the first two sets but couldn't break through. In Set 3, Dean's offense further asserted itself
On Lyndon's side, Mack (three kills), Clunis (two kills), and Gerrish (one kill) provided offense, while Clunis also added an ace, and Mack grabbed a block. Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) snagged nine digs and Clunis added eight.
Dean was led by Chloe DeMaio with seven kills (.636 hitting), Caitlin Cooper with five, and Katie Jones with four. Serving pressure came from Carly Rettberg and Maddie Bell, each with four aces, and Emma Siniscalchi adding two. Emma also contributed eight assists to help power Dean's offense.
The Hornets will travel to Mitchell College for a non-confernce matchup on Wednesday evening. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
