Castine, ME - The Vermont State University Lyndon volleyball team traveled to Maine Maritime Academy for a pair of non-conference matchups on Saturday afternoon. The Mariners cruised to a pair of straight set victories to improve to 7-3 on the season, while the Hornets remain winless in ten matches.
Match #1 - Maine Maritime 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-3, 25-3, 25-4)
The Hornets struggled to gain footing against the Mariners, managing only two total kills and committing eight attack errors. In contrast, Maine Maritime produced 33 kills on .625 hitting and piled up 27 aces.
Individually, Lyndon was led by Sydney Clunis (Windsor, ON) and Olivia Cordova (Craig, CO) with one kill apiece. Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) paced the defense with four digs.
For Maine Maritime, Hunnie Zuber-Stephens excelled, supporting the offense with service pressure and assists. Ila Smith, Ally Hadley, and Sophia Biggie also delivered strong attacking numbers.
Match #2 - Maine Maritime 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 ( 25-5, 25-8, 25-5)
Though the Hornets still trailed significantly, they showed more offensive movement than in the morning match, totaling eight kills and 26 digs. Senior Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) led Lyndon with six kills and 13 points, while Clunis added two kills and 11 digs.
Maine Maritime's balanced attack again proved overwhelming. Zuber-Stephens delivered 10 service aces. Smith, Hannah Tate, and Lauren Davis combined for double-digit kills.
Lyndon will travel to Plymouth State University on Wednesday evening for another non-conference match. The opening serve is scheduled for 5:00 pm.;
