Nightmare first inning proves to be Hornet baseball's downfall in loss to VTSU Castleton

Castleton, VT - Vermont State University Castleton capitalized on three Vermont State University Lyndon errors to score 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning, eight of them unearned, and went on to pick up a 15-10 non-conference baseball victory on Thursday afternoon.  The Spartans improved to 9-14 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 6-17.

Jackson Cardozo had a huge game at the plate for Castleton.  He pounded two home runs and a double, driving in six runs and scoring three times.  Mike Raby Jr. had three hits and two RBIs and Joe Castellano drove in a pair and scored three times.  Kevin Hewlett, the second of six Castleton pitchers, picked up the win after throwing two hitless innings of relief.

Evan Duncan (Little Elm, TX) had a big day at the plate for the Hornets.  He had four hits, including a home run and a double, in six at bats and drove in five runs.  Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) had a double and scored twice.  Alberto Bustamante (Northridge, CA), Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE), Carter Paquette (Shoreham, VT), and Kearson Grisham (Choctaw, MS) had Lyndon's other hits.  Hornet starter Mike Redmond (Plantation, FL) took the loss.

Lyndon will travel to Maine this weekend for a pair of North Atlantic Conference doubleheaders.  On Saturday the Hornets will play at Husson University, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm.  Then on Sunday, Lyndon will face Thomas College in a 12:00 noon twin bill.
