Hornet baseball rallies for walkout win over UMaine-Farmington, falls to Fisher

Lynn, MA - Vermont State University Lyndon fell behind the University of Maine at Farmington early but rallied for a North Atlantic Conference baseball victory on Saturday afternoon.  In their second game of the day the Hornets fell to host Fisher College.  Lyndon moved to 5-10 on the season and 2-1 in NAC play.  UMF fell to 4-8 on the season and 0-3 in the NAC.  Fisher improved to 14-12.

Game 1 - VTSU Lyndon 6, UMaine-Farmington 5

In the top of the first inning, the Beavers started off with a double from Ryan Sargent.  Sophomore pitcher for Lyndon Jack Holley (San Gabriel, CA) would walk Nate Coombs, which put two man on base with one out.  Coombs and Sargent went on to score on a double to left field by Matt Marquis.  The Hornets cut the lead in half when sophomore outfielder Evan Duncan (Little Elm, TX) scored on a wild pitch.  Farmington's starting pitcher Will Harriman got out of a two-out jam, leaving two Hornets in scoring position.

The Beavers started off the top of the second inning with a single from Jayden Meader.  Meader scored on a double by Jameson Bloch to left center to make the score 3-1.  He advanced to third on wild pitch by Holley and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Coombs.  Following the sacrifice fly, Matt Marquis singled to center field and Farmington now had two runners on base, but Holley managed to get out of the jam to keep the score 4-1. 

In the bottom of the third inning, the Hornets had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Harriman escaped that inning without any runs scored.  The Beavers also had two runners on with two outs, but Holley managed to get out of trouble.

The bottom of the fourth was the end for starting pitcher Harriman.  He was relieved Logan Holcomb.  Senior third baseman E.J. Camden (Corona, CA) walked to get Lyndon going and senior second baseman Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) singled.  Freshman catcher Austin Bigelow (East Hampton, CT) would reach on an error and the Hornets had the bases loaded with no outs.  Holcomb got out of the bases loaded jam with a strikeout, a pop fly to shortstop, and a fly-out to a right field.

In the fifth inning Farmington had a man on third base with two outs, but were unable to score. 

The top of sixth came and it was the end for Holley.  He finished the game with three strikeouts, four walks, four runs in five innings pitched.  Freshman Tyler Kimball (Vergennes, VT) came on as the relieve pitcher.  The Beavers went scoreless at the top of the fifth. 

The bottom of fifth started with a single with Camden.  Bigelow would walk and the Hornets would have two runners on base.  With two outs, freshman first baseman Bryan Nazario (Little Elm, TX) singled up the middle to bring in Camden and Bigelow.  The score now was 4-3 with the Beavers still leading.

Coming in to pitch was Ostermann and sophomore Isaiah Wittrig (Phoenix, AZ) would now play second.  Ostermann put up a zero to keep the Hornets within range.

The bottom of the seventh started with a walk to junior right fielder Matt Gonyeau (Saint Albans, VT).  Junior Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) hit a double to give the Hornets a chance to take the lead.  Aaron Goshke came in to pitch for the Beavers.  The Hornets took a one run lead courtesy of Camden reaching on an error by Beavers' shortstop Cal Tibbitts.  Senior Alberto Bustamente (Northridge, CA) pinch hit with the bases loaded with two outs, but the Beavers escaped the jam with a ground out to third.

The next inning, the Beavers started off with a big double from Ike Wrigley.  The Hornets managed to get two outs, but the Beavers tied the game with a clutch single by Coombs. The Hornets went scoreless and the game moved to the ninth inning.

After the Beavers went scoreless in the top of the ninth, the Hornets had a chance to win it.  Camden and Ostermann hit singles to start off the inning.  Camden got picked off at second base for a crucial first out.  Bigelow grounded out to the pitcher and Ostermann advanced to second.  Farmington intentianlly walked Duncan to put man on first and second.  Bustamente ended up walking, and the Hornets had the winning run on third.  Freshman shortstop Eyon Tembreull (Vergennes, VT) had a chance to win the game, and he did by getting hit by a ptich after being down in the count.

For the Hornets, Camden got two hits with one run batted in.  Ostermann also had two hits and also had good pitching performance with three innings and three strikeouts while getting the win.  Ostermann's record for the year is now 1-1

Fisher 11, VTSU Lyndon 1

Fisher jumped to a 7-0 lead and pounded out 12 hits in cruising to the non-conference victory.  Jatnier Torres had a double, two singles, three runs batted in, and a two runs scored to lead the Falcons.  Yariel Salinas added three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI and Gilbert Gomez chipped in with a double, two singles, two runs scored, and an RBI.  Vance Serrano struck out 13 while allowing one run and four hits over six innings to pick up the win.

Duncan, Nazario, Tembreull, and James Ripley (Jeffersonville, VT) had the only Lyndon hits.  Joey Hanlon (Trinity, FL) started and took the loss..  

Lyndon will run it back against the same teams on Sunday.  First pitch for the Hornets and Beavers will again be 2:30 pm, with the Hornets and Falcons squaring off at 6:00 pm.
