Cobleskill, NY - Vermont State University Lyndon came up just short on Friday night, falling 61–58 to SUNY Cobleskill in a tightly contested North Atlantic Conference women's basketball matchup at Iorio Gymnasium. The Hornets fell to 5–2 overall and 1–1 in conference play, while the Fighting Tigers improved to 3–3 and 1–2 in the NAC.
Lyndon trailed 38-26 at halftime after Cobleskill used an 18–15 first quarter and a 20–11 second to build an early cushion. The Hornets responded with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 19–9 to pull within two points entering the final quarter.
Neither team was able to seize control in the final quarter, and a pair of Skylar Begay (Tucscon, AZ) free throws pulled Lyndon within two at 59-57 with 1:51 to go. Both teams had multiple opportunities, but neither was able to convert until Begay was fouled with 24 seconds to go. The sophomore made one of two to cut the Cobleskill lead to a single point. The Tigers' Kayleigh Bryant was fouled on the subsequent possession, and also converted one of two, pushing the lead back to two. Lyndon came up dry on their next possession, then Jaiyla Colon made the second of two free throws with four seconds remaining. A long Hornet three-pointer to tie at the buzzer was off the mark, allowing Cobleskill to escape with the win.
Begay led all scorers with 15 points. Guard Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) added 13 points and eight assists, while senior post Kiara Mack (Milton, VT) scored 10 points. Senior guard Kadienne Whitcomb (West Burke, VT) contributed nine points and freshman Nei'Shae Clegg (Coolidge, AZ) pulled down ten rebounds.
Sydney Delisle was the only Cobleskill player in double figured, finishing with 11 points. Colon, Kate Hadwen, and Alyssa Martin added nine each, and Hannah Bonczkowski chipped in eight as the Tigers spread the scoring.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday afternoon with another NAC contest, this one at the State University of New York at Delhi. Tip-of is set for 3:00 pm.
