Chicopee, MA - Vermont State University Lyndon couldn't keep pace with a hot-shooting Elms College squad Wednesday night, falling 103–78 in non-conference men's basketball action.
Sophomore guard Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) led the Hornets with 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting, including a pair of threes, while adding three rebounds. Graduate student Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) provided 16 points, six rebounds — four on the offensive glass — and three assists as Lyndon put together a stronger second-half effort after falling behind by 22 points at intermission.
Elms controlled the game from the start, the big first-half advantage to create separation the Hornets were unable to erase. The Blazers were powered by a pair of dominant performances. RJ Mayfield finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while D.J. Watkins also posted 25 points and six boards. Elms shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded Lyndon 47–28, turning 15 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points.
Lyndon shot 47 percent in the second half and showed improved ply after the break, but couldn't cut the deficit below 17 points.
Lyndon's next contest will be an exhibition game at Division I University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
