Plymouth, NH - Vermont State University Lyndon's late rally came up short as the Hornets fell 69–63 to Plymouth State University in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday evening.
Plymouth State led 9–6 after the first quarter and maintained their slim three-point advantage heading into halftime. The Panthers extended the margin in the third quarter, outscoring Lyndon 19–11 to build a 49-38 lead heading into the final period.
Lyndon cut into the deficit in the fourth, closing to within two points following a pair of free throws from Skylar Begay (Tucson, AZ) with just over four minutes remaining. That would be as close as the Hornets would get, however, as Plymouth converted eight of eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Begay led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, and added 11 rebounds. Kiara Mack (Milton, VT) posted 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Nei'Shae Clegg (Coolidge, AZ) finished with 8 points and 10 boards for the Hornets.
Macy Swormstedt and Hailey Malozzi each scored 16 points to pace Plymouth State, which improved to 5–0 on the season
Lyndon shot 33 percent from the field and 24 percent from beyond the arc. Plymouth converted 22 Lyndon turnovers into 22 Panther points, which proved to be the difference in the contest.
Lyndon dropped to 3–1 with the loss. The Hornets return home to play Wentworth Institute of Technology at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
