Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon Hornets (3-20, 1-5 North Atlantic) fell to the State University of New York at Cobleskill Fighting Tigers (6-14, 4-3 North Atlantic) in straight sets Saturday, 25-23, 25-11, 25-8, at the George W. Stannard Gymnasium.
The Hornets started fast in the opening set, jumping out to a 7-o lead. Lyndon kept pace with Cobleskill through much of the early going, trailing just 14-13 before a pair of service aces by Cobleskill's Jade Ward broke open the frame. The Hornets rallied back to pull within 24-22 but Cobleskill closed it out on a kill by Emma Hinze to seal the first set, 25-23.
The second frame proved more one-sided. Cobleskill jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, shutting down Lyndon's offense and converting at a strong clip. The Hornets managed just 11 points as Cobleskill took the set 25-11.
By the third set, Cobleskill's dominance was clear. Lyndon struggled to build any consistent offense or defense and the Fighting Tigers rolled to a 25-8 set victory to complete the sweep.
For Lyndon, three players shared the team-high in kills with five each: Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT), Sydney Clunis (Windsor, ON) and Nei'Shae Clegg (Coolidge, AZ). Mack added five digs, while Clunis posted a team-best 14 digs and Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) added ten.
Cobleskill was led by Hinze's 13.0 points (seven kills, seven errors, 23 attempts), Hallie Gasner's eight kills and Kathleen Smart's six kills. Hinze also notched ten digs, while Gasner added a service ace and Smart chipped in eight points.
