New Haven, CT - The Vermont State University Lyndon volleyball team showed steady improvement but came up short in a 3-0 loss at Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday night. The Falcons took the match by scores of 25-7, 25-20 and 25-23.
After a slow start in the opening set, the Hornets regrouped and pushed Albertus Magnus the rest of the way. Â Lyndon battled throughout the second set, stringing together points on strong serving runs from Sydney Clunis (Windsor, ON) and Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) to keep within striking distance before the Falcons were able to close it out late.
The third set was the most competitive of the night, as the Hornets traded points with the hosts from start to finish. Â Lyndon's defense, led by Clunis and Nei'Shae Clegg (Coolidge, AZ)Â in the back row, kept rallies alive and gave the Hornets chances at the net. Â Mack provided a spark with timely kills, and Clunis contributed on both ends, but Albertus Magnus managed to pull out the final points to seal the match.
Albertus Magnus' attack was led by Paula Matheus, who tallied 11 kills, and Jazmine Taboas Negro, who added 10 kills of her own. Â On the service line, Alyssa Valentine turned heads with five aces, while Isabella Leatherman contributed four. Â Shalese Gordon orchestrated the offense with 14 assists, and Jazmine Taboas Negro also anchored the back row with 10 digs.
Clunis finished with six kills, two service aces and a team-high 15 digs to lead Lyndon. Â Mack added five kills and 10 digs, while Clegg chipped in three kills and nine digs. Olivia Cordova (Craig, CO) paced the Hornets' attack with 10 assists.
The loss drops Lyndon to 0-12 on the season, while Albertus improved to 6-8. Â The Hornets will open North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they host Vermont State University Johnson at 1:00 pm.
