Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Oscar Paredes

Hornet women rout SUNY Delhi behind Smith's record 42 points

Lyndonville, VT- The Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team got back in the win column with a dominant victory over the SUNY Delhi Broncos by a score of 90-49. The Hornets improve their season to 5-11 and their conference record to 3-5. The Broncos have yet to win this season.

After a tightly contested first half that saw Lyndon take a slim 40-35 lead into intermission, the Hornets came out of the locker room with a third quarter blitz.  Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) and Sage Smith (Colebrook, VT) scored the first two baskets of the quarter, then Samantha Miller knocked down a jumper for Delhi.  That would prove to be the only Bronco bucket of the quarter, as the Hornet defense forced numerous Delhi turnovers and contested shots and ran off 24 unanswered points to break the game open.

The Hornets were on fire shooting the ball this game, connecting on an efficient 53% from the field and 47.8% from behind the arc.  In addition to having a great shooting performance, Lyndon also had fifteen steals and forced 26 Delhi turnovers.  The Hornets scored 29 points from those turnovers.  Lyndon also held SUNY Delhi to just 30% from the field and the three-point line.

Smith exploded for a career high 42 points, a Lyndon record for the modern Division III era.  She connected on seven of 11 three-pointers, dished out six assists, and grabbed five rebounds.  Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) also had a big all-around game with 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals.  Mack reached double figures with ten points and pulled down six boards.  Every Hornet who dressed for the game scored.

Miller was the only Bronco in double figures, finishing with 19 points.  Jewel Torres pulled down 19 rebounds.

The Hornets will go on the road on Tuesday to play a non-conference game against the Paul Smith's College Bobcats at 6:00 pm.
