Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornets drop non-conference match to UMaine-Presque Isle

Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's soccer team came up short in Sunday's men's soccer game against the University of Maine at Presque Isle.  The visiting Owls picked up the 3-0 victory over the Hornets to improve to 2-4 on the season.  Lyndon fell to 0-4-1.

UMPI got on the scoreboard in the 18th minute after Lyndon goalkeeper D'Amecio Singleton (Savannah,  GA) turned away the Owls' Remar Shirley from right in front of the goal.  The Hornet defense failed to clear the ball, however, and Shirley poked the rebound past Singleton to put UMPI in front.

The Hornets were able to keep the Owls off of the board for the remainder of the opening half despite UMPI holding a 17-1 shot advantage.  However UMPI extended their lead shortly after halftime when Ethan Cameron crossed the ball into the box and Billy Wray redirected it to Shirley, collected his second goal of the match.

The Owls added some breathing room in the 76th minute when Nyden Reed made a move from the right wing to get free in the box, then fired a left footed shot past Singleton just under the crossbar.  That would be the final goal of the game, as Lyndon played more evenly in the second half but was unable to get on the board.

For teh game, the Owls outshot the Hornets, 26-8, and held a 13-4 advantage in corner kicks.  Owl goalkeeper Samuel Paladino made a pair of saves, one against Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT), and the other against Winter Hill Barnes (St. Johnsbury, VT) to pick up the clean sheet.  Singleton turned away eight shots in net for the Hornets.

Lyndon will remain home for another non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon.  Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts will come to Varsity Field for a 3:30 pm start.
