Randolph, VT - The men's soccer teams from Vermont State University's Lyndon and Randolph campuses met on the pitch Wednesday afternoon, both seeking their first victory of the season. When the dust settled 90 minutes later, the two teams had battled to a 2-2 draw. The Hornets are now 0-3-1 on the season, while the Knights are 0-4-1.
Randolph got on the board first in the 31st minute. Joey Reynolds took a pass from Owen Thomas and put a shot past Lyndon goalkeeper D'Amecio Singleton (Savannah, GA).
The Hornets got the equalizer in the 34th minute when Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) took a Knight giveaway and went on a long run from his own end of the field. Gratton chipped a shot over Randolph keeper Shane Mapes to tie things at 1-1.
Lyndon took the lead in the 36th minute when Flores made a run up the right side and sent a long cross to David Gratton (Newport, VT). Gratton was able to fire a shot over Mapes to put Lyndon in front.
The Hornets were able to nurse the one-goal lead until the 66th minute, when they were called for a foul in the box. Reynolds converted the ensuing penalty kick to even things at 2-2. That's how things would end.
Lyndon returns home on Sunday afternoon, when they take on the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
