Johnson, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon volleyball team showed signs of improvement on day two of the annual Vermont Volleyball Classic. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, as tournament host Vermont State University Johnson came away with the 3-0 victory. The Badgers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 0-3.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the early going, Johnson ran off five straight points to open up some breathing room. The Badgers extended their advantage to 15-5 before Lyndon ran off three straight points on a Johnson service error, a Malika Wheeler (Brooklyn, NY) kill, and a Mary Grace Weissauer (Milford, CT) ace to cut the lead to seven. That would be as close as Lyndon would get in the set, however, as Johnson ran off ten straight points on Jennifer Longway's serve to take the set, 25-8.
Set two was a back and forth affair and Lyndon's most competitive set of the young season. With Weissauer serving, the Hornets capitalized on a pair of Badger errors to grab a 4-2 lead. Johnson responded with a four-point run of their own to regain the lead, Lyndon hung close to Johnson for the next several points, and a Weissauer ace cut the Badger lead to 16-12. Johnson responded with a five-point run, highlighted by four straight Natalia Media aces. The Badgers kept the Hornets at bay from there and took the second set, 25-15.
After Johnson grabbed an early 8-2 lead in the third set, Lyndon ran off five straight points capped by back to back aces from Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA), to pull within one at 8-7. Johnson then took control with a 9-0 run of their own, and put the match away with a 25-12 set victory.
Max Ludlow paced Johnson with 11 kills and setter Delaney Gross notched 18 assists and added four digs. Medina and Longway finished wiht nine aces apiece.
Wheeler and Gonzalez recorded the only Hornet kills and Alyssa Gerrish (Alburgh, VT) recorded the only assist. Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) finished with a mathc high six digs.
Lyndon is off until next Sunday, when they host the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a pair of Non-conference matches. The opening serve is scheduled for 11:00 am.
