Johnson, VT- The Vermont State University Lyndon volleyball team opened the 2024 season with a pair of matches at the Vermont Volleyball Classic, hosted by Vermont State University Johnson, on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were swept, 3-0, in both outings, falling to Vermont State University Castleton and Norwich University.
VTSU Castleton 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-4, 25-7, 25-3)
Castleton scored the first five points of the match and never looked back. Kaitlyn Chapman led a balanced Spartan attack with five kills. Alondra Rojas notched seven assists and Victoria Garcia had four assists and four digs.
Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) led Lyndon with three kills. Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) had a pair of assists for the Hornets.
Norwich 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-6, 25-9, 25-9)
The Hornets took an early 4-1 lead in the opening set, before the Cadets went on a ten-point run and took control. The second set followed the same pattern of a tight contest in the early going, only to have another big Norwich run break things open. The Cadets scored the first eight points of the third set and cruised to the three-set win.
Giovanna Fruci and Lillie Ellis had three kills apiece for Norwich. Ava Nihill and Autumn Parkhurst had four assists each and Parkhurst and Aylei Connolly each recorded eight aces. Grace Davie had five digs.
Mack again paced Lyndon with three kills. Kazandra Gonzalez (Norwalk, CA) had a pair of assists and Anderson added three digs.
The Hornets will close out play in the Vermont Classic when they take on host VTSU Johnson Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
