Hornet baseball unable to hold off Colby-Sawyer College

Lyndonville, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon fell behind Colby-Sawyer College, 8-1 in game one of Monday's non-conference baseball doubleheader and couldn't complete a comeback.  The Hornets took an eight run lead in the nightcap before the Chargers rallied to complete the sweep.  Colby-Sawyer improved to 19-12 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 3-23.

Game 1 - Colby-Sawyer 9, VTSU Lyndon 4

The Chargers plated three unearned runs in the top of the third inning and added five more in the fourth to take control.  Devoin Montalvo, Noah Staffier, and Jared Schmitt had two hits apiece for Colby-Sawyer.  Evan Dennis allowed three earned runs and four hits over four innings to pick up the win.  Hayden Goerlich pitched three shutout innings of relief to earn the save.

Alberto Bustamante (Northridge, CA) was three for four for Lyndon.  Nolan Barber (Jericho, VT) had a single and a double for the Hornets.  Starter Brandon Fernandez (Sebring, FL) went three innings and allowed foru earned runs in absorbing the loss.

Game 2 - Colby-Sawyer 13, VTSU Lyndon 10

Lyndon scored five runs in the second inning and five more in the third to take a 10-2 lead.  However the Chargers came storming back with six runs in the fourth inning, then overtook the Hornets with four more in the top of the seventh.  Cam Carignan had a huge game for Colby-Sawyer, going four for four with three runs batted in and four runs scored.  Schmitt had a pair of hits including a solo home run.  Jack Mullen, the sixth Charger pitcher of the game, pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.

Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) and Dale Ostermann (Harrington, DE) had two hits apiece for Lyndon.  Jack Holley (San Gabriel, CA) took the loss.

Lyndon hosts Fisher College for a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
