Hornet baseball drops southern finale to Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary's City, MD - The Vermont State University Lyndon baseball team fell to Saint Mary's College of Maryland in the finale of their four-game southern swing on Friday afternoon.  The host Seahawks came away with a 4-2 victory and improved to 2-3 on the season.  The Hornets remain winless in four starts.

Saint Mary's got on the board in the home half of the fifth inning.  George Berbakos drew a one-out walk off of Lyndon starter Jack Holley (San Gabriel, CA) then stole second.  He came around to score following Chase O'Dell's base hit.

The Seahawks manufactured an unearned run in the second inning to make it 2-0.

Lyndon broke through against Saint Mary's starter Tommy Brill in the top of the fourth inning.  TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) led off with a base hit back up the middle.  Evan Duncan's (Little Elm, TX) sacrifice bunt moved Santaw to second, then Ryan Alt's (Poultry, VT) ground out moved Santaw to third,  Santa crossed the plate when Matt Gonyeau (St. Albans, VT) beat out an infield hit,

Pitching ruled the middle innings, as neither team was able to break through further against Holley or Brill.  Mike Redmond (Plantation, FL) relieved Holley in the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings.

With the score still 2-1, Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) came on for Redmond in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Cole Tarleton created Rodriguez with a triple to left field, then came in to score on Gavin Walthen's sacrifice fly.

After David Baggott came on for Brill and pitched a scoreless eighth inning, Saint Mary's tacked off a run in the bottom half of the inning when Berbakos laced a one-out triple and scored on O'Dell's sacrifice fly.

Down to their final at bat, Lyndon seemed to get something going against Seahawk reliever Austin Ferreira when Duncan led off the inning with a walk.  Duncan moved to second on a passed ball, then to third when Alt grounded out.  He came in to score when Gonyeau grounded out.  With two outs, pinch hitter Will Perkins (Holtwood, PA) singled to keep the Hornets alive and bring the tying run to the plate.  However Ferreira got pinch hitter Anthony Ness (Silver Springs, NV) to ground out, giving the Seahawks the win.

Brill picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing only one run and three hits while striking out eight without issuing a walk.  Ferreira picked up the save.  Holley took the loss for Lyndon, allowing one earned run and four hits in four innings of work.

The Hornets are off until March 16th and 17th, when they travel to Fisher College for a four-game series.
