Lynn, MA - Fisher College got the best of Vermont State University Lyndon in both ends of Saturday afternoon's non-conference baseball doubleheader. The Falcons edged the Hornets, 4-2, in the opener, then completed the sweep with an 11-5 victory in the nightcap. Fisher improved to 6-17 on the season while Lyndon remained winless in six outings.
Game 1 - Fisher 4, VTSU Lyndon 2
Yariel Salinas' two-run double was the big blow as Fisher plated four runs in the home half of the third inning. That was the only damage that the Falcons were able to do against Lyndon starter Nathan Bigelow (East Hampton, CT), who didn't allow a run or a hit in any other inning.
The Hornets tried to climb back in the top of the fourth inning, as they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batsman. Will Perkins (Holtswood, PA) got Lyndon on the board with a sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Gonyeau (Saint Albans, VT). Alberto Bustamante's (Northridge, CA) two-out base hit scored Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) to cut the Fisher lead to 4-2.
That would be all the Hornets could muster, however, as the only other hot that Fisher starter Vance Serano allowed was Alt's second inning single. Serano struck out four and walked four over six innings to earn the win. Joziel Carmona came on to pitch a scoreless seventh and pick up the save. Bigelow took the hard luck loss, striking out seven against only one walk.
Game 2 - Fisher 11, VTSU Lyndon 5
Fisher broke a 1-1 tie with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back in taking the nightcap. Gabriel Rivera was the hitting star for the Falcons with a triple, a single, four runs batted in, and a run scored. Ruben Rodriguez added two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
Matt Doherty (Gardner, MA) had a big game for Lyndon, producing three hits including a double and driving in a run. Alt and TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) added two hits apiece.
Ronald Luke started and picked up the win for Fisher. He allowed five runs, two of them earned, and scattered nine hits over 5.1 innings. Jacob Wechselblatt (Reston, VA) started for Lyndon and took the loss.
The Hornets and Falcons will conclude the four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
