Harrisonburg, VA - Eastern Mennonite College plated runs in every inning except the first in downing Vermont State University Lyndon, 14-2, in Thursday afternoon's non-conference college baseball game. The Royals evened their record at 3-3, while the Hornets fell to 0-3.
After a scoreless first inning, EMC got on the board in the bottom of the second. Erik Wilkinson led off the inning with a double and Matthew Harding followed with a base hit. Colin Troilo then reached on an error, allowing both runners to score and give the Royals the lead. Troilo later came around to score to make it 3-0.
EMC continued to pour it on, putting runs on the board in every subsequent inning. Troilo was the hitting star, delivering a single and a double, driving in four runs, and scoring twice. Ethan Spraker and Garrett Nyce also scored twice.
Lyndon was unable to break through until the top of the ninth inning. Dalton Berry (Tavares, FL) got things started with a one-out infield single. Will Perkins (Holtwood, PA then drew a walk. After Brandon Fernandez (Sebring, FL) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Tyler Murro's (Littleton, NH)) sacrifice fly drove in Berry with the first Hornet run. Matt Gonyeau (St. Albans, VT) then reached on an error, allowing Perkins to score, but that was the extent of the Lyndon rally.
TJ Santaw (Newport, VT), Gonyeau, and Anthony Ness (Silver Springs, NV) were the only other Hornets to hit safely.
Jack Dooley picked up the win for EMC, striking out seven in five shutout innings while only allowing three hits and a walk. Damen Tapscott earned the save with four innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out seven.
Lyndon wraps up their southern trip at Saint Mary's College of Maryland on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
