Lyndonville, VT - Westfield State University turned 36 Vermont State University Lyndon turnovers into 50 points in cruising to a 133-81 men's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improved to 9-3 with the win, while the Hornets fell to 4-7 on the season.
Westfield took advantage of eight Lyndon turnovers in the opening five and a half minutes to sprint to a 19-4 lead. The Owls never looked back, scoring 72 first half points and taking a 72-30 lead into the locker room.
The Owls placed six players in double figures, led by Kennith Rogers Jr., who posted a double double with 19 points and ten rebounds. Angel Price-Espada was next with 16 points. Kaiden James chipped in with 15 points. Xavier Lewis and A.Z. Allah added 14 and 13 points respectively, with each dishing out four assists. Jason James also finished in double digits with 12 points.
Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) led Lyndon with 15 points. Christian Hathorn (Wilder, VT) added 12 points while Max Kocha (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) finished with 11 points and a team best six rebounds. Chad Martin (Henniker, NH) dished out a game high six assists.
Westfield State shot 60.7% from the floor, including 35.3% from behind the three-point arc. Meanwhile the Hornets shot 44.6% from the floor and 46.7% from distance. The Owls owned a 42-36 rebounding advantage and a big advantage at the foul line, converting 25 of 36 attempts to only nine of 14 for Lyndon.
The Hornets are now off for final exams and the holidays. Their next game will be a non-conference matchup at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Friday, January 3rd, at 1:00 pm.
