Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hornet women can't recover from early hole against Saint Elizabeth

New York, NY - Saint Elizabeth University jumped out to a 12-1 lead and never looked back, defeating Vermont State University Lyndon, 70-49, in the consolation game of the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament.  Saint Elizabeth evened their rocord at 3-3 with the win, while Lyndon dropped to 2-4.

The Eagles pushed their advantage to 18 points at halftime.  The Hornets briefly threatened to get back in the game at the start of the second half, scoring the first seven points of the third quarter to cut the Saint Elizabeth lead to 11.  That was as close as Lyndon would get, however, as the Eagles built their lead back to 18 after three quarters and led by as much as 25 in the final period before settling for the 21-point win.

Yasminah White led Saint Elizabeth with 20 points and six assists.  Ashley Phillip chipped in with 16 points and Ahjionae Cobb shipped in with 11 points.  Laila Kendle pulled down ten rebounds.

Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) paced Lyndon with 18 points.  Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) added 16 points and Niyjah Wright (Washington, DC) grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.

Saint Elizabeth took advantage of 27 Lyndon turnovers, turning them into 17 points.  The Eagles also got significant production from their bench as they outscored the Hornet reserves, 19-2.  Lyndon held a 56-53 rebounding advantage in a game where both teams struggled to find the range from the floor.  Saint Elizabeth shot only 35.3% overall and 15.8% rom behind the three-point arc, while Lyndon was even colder, shooting 29.4% from the floor and 11.5% from long range.

Smith and White were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Alexa Charles and Kennedy DeRuy of Hunter and Sabayla Jensen and Sampras Merchant of the University of Massachusetts Boston.  Hunter defeated UMass Boston, 71-57, for the tournament championship.

The Hornets are off until Thursday, December 5th, when they travel to Elms College for a 6:30 pm non-conference tip-off.
