New York, NY - After a long day of travel, the Vermont State University Lyndon women's basketball team's day became even longer, thanks to Hunter College. The host Hawks put on an offensive clinic, defeating the Hornets, 87-42, in the opening round of the Hunter College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening. Hunter evened their record at 2-2 with the win, while Lyndon fell to 2-3.
Alexa Charles had a huge game in leading Hunter to the victory. She stuffed the stat sheet with 29 points, 15 rebounds, seven steals, and five assists. Katie Burke chipped in with 21 points, including five three-point goals. Kennedy DeRuy also reached double figures with 11 points.
Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) and Niyjah Wright (Washington, DC) led Lyndon with 14 and 13 points respectively. Smith also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Hunter shot 49.2% from the floor and 38.9% from three-point line, while Lyndon only converted 32.7% of their shots, including only 25.0% from distance. The Hawks also forced 31 Lyndon turnovers, resulting in 38 Hawk points.
Lyndon will face Saint Elizabeth University in the tournament's consolation game Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm. Saint Elizabeth fell to the University of Massachusetts Boston, 84-55, in Friday's other first round game. UMass Boston will take on Hunter for the tournament championship at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
