Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hornet men can't overcome hot shooting Clarkson

Lyndonville, VT - Visiting Clarkson University connected on ten three-point goals in the opening half, then held off Vermotn State University Lyndon for an 85-71 men's basketball victory on Wednesday afternoon.  The Golden Knights won their third game in a row to improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 2-3.

Much of the opening half was a back and forth affair.  After a pair of Hornet free throws from Christian Hathorn (Wilder, VT) tied the game at 27-27, back to back three-pointers from Mathew Parent ignited a 10-0 Clarkson run to give the Knights control.  Clarkson was able to maintain their advantage and take a 47-36 lead into halftime.  Clarkson's Steve DeRegis drained five of six three-point attempts in the opening half to pace Clarkson.

The Hornets converted a Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) steal into a Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) three-pointer to cut the Clarkson lead to eight on the first sequence of the second half, but back to back DeRegis threes pushed the Knight lead back to 14.  A three ball from Victor Kukta Reyes (Fitchburg, MA) brought the Hornets back to within eight at the 15:58 mark, but Brandon Burns' dunk on the next possession pushed the lead back to double figures and the Knights kept the Hornets at bay the rest of the way.

DeRegis connected on seven of nine three-pointers for a game high 21 points and added four assists.  Parent added 15 points on five three-point goals.  Burns abd Tyson Maxam also reached double figures with 11 and ten points respectively.

Gonyea scored 20 points to lead Lyndon with 20 points and four assists.  Wesley McIntyre added 15 points and Doyle finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Lyndon is off until after Thanksgiving.  The Hornets return to action on Saturday, November 30th, when they play at Union College in the opening round of the Sig Makofski Invitational.  Tip-off is at 4:00 pm, following the first opening round game between Colby College and Plattsburgh State University.  The first day winners will play for the tournament championship on Sunday, December 1st, at 4:00 pm, following a 2:00 pm consolation game.
