Hornet men dig big early hole and can't climb out

Schenectady, NY - Union College sprinted out to a 19-0 lead over the first six minutes of Saturday's men's basketball game against Vermont State University Lyndon.  The Hornets never recovered, as the host Chargers picked up a 112-75 victory in the opening round of the Sig Makofski Invitational Tournament.  Union improved to 3-1 on the season and will face Colby College in Sunday's 4:00 pm championship game.  Colby was a 100-70 winner over the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in Saturday's first opening round contest.  Lyndon fell to 2-4 on the campaign and will face Plattsburgh in the consolation game Sunday at 2:00 pm.

Union placed six players in double figures while shooting 64.3% from the field and 55.6% from behind the three-point arc for the game.  Jack Plesser led the Chargers with 20 points and Neil Datero added 18 points.  Tanner Tadesco tallied 11 points and five assists and Jaden Jauregui also scored 11 points.  Matthew Garside and Will Yakoobian rounded out the double figure scorers with ten points apiece.

Tyler Cooper (Sterling, NY) was Lyndon's only double figure scorer, finishing with 19 points on seven of 11 shooting, including five of seven from behind the three-point arc.  Wesley McIntyre (Troy, NY) and Victor Kukta Reyes (Fitchburg, MA) scored nine points each.  Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) scored eight points and grabbed a team best six rebounds.  Christian Hathorn (Wilder, VT) also tallied eight points.

Lyndon shot 40.8% from the field and 30.8% from distance.  Union outrebounded the Hornets, 42-28, and forced 17 Lyndon turnovers.  The Hornets forced the Chargers into 16 giveaways.
