Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hornets fall to Wheaton in first game back from break

Norton, MA - The Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team took to the hardwood for the first time in nearly four weeks on Saturday afternoon.  After battling Wheaton College on even terms in the opening minutes, a disastrous 26-2 Lyon run midway through the first half put the Hornets in a whole tht they were never able to recover from.  Wheaton maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way to earn an 82-54 non-conference victory. The Lyons improved to 7-4 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 0-12.

Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) scored six of the first nine Lyndon points to pull the Hornets into a 9-9 tie three minutes into the game.  After a Tristan Henry free throw put Wheton back in front, Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) scored inside to give Lyndon an 11-10 advantage.  Wheaton responded with back to back baskets from Eoin Morrissey and Dimitri Iafrate before Isaac McCann (Phoenix, AZ) knocked down a jumper in the paint to pull Lyndon within one at the 13:35 mark.

At that point Wheaton capitalized on some cold Hornet shooting and turnovers to seize control of the game.  Over the next nine minutes, The Lyons outscored the Hornets, 26-2, to take a 40-16 advantage.  A quick 6-0 Hornet run brought the lead back under 20, but Wheaton steadied things and took a 45-24 lead into halftime.

Lyndon never got any closer than 17 points in the second half, as Wheaton cruised to the win.

Ty Murphy scored 19 points to pace Wheaton, while Chris Billone added 11.  Gonyea was the only Hornet in double figures, as he finished with 18 points.

Lyndon will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Clarkson University for a 2:00 pm tip-off.  The game was originally scheduled for December 17th, before being postponed.
