Lyndonville, VT - Maine Maritime Academy scored three times in the first 20 minutes and made it stand up, defeating Vermont State University Lyndon, 3-1, in North Atlantic Conference women's soccer on Saturday. The Mariners improved to 6-1-1 on the season. The game was their NAC opener. Lyndon fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Maine Maritime took the lead in the 12th minute when Delaney Ennis took a throw-in and scored. The Mariners took a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute when Kirra Magana beat a pair of Hornet defenders then dropped off a pass to Sierra Hoops, whi tapped it in the net. Magana made it 3-0 in the 20th minute when she took a through ball and scored.
The Hornet defense would keep the Mariners off the scoreboard the rest of the contest. Lyndon finally got on the board in the 86th minute when Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) poked in a rebound off of a Riann Fortin (Newport, VT) shot.
Maine Maritime outshot Lyndon, 34-2, and earned seven corner kicks to none for the Hornets. Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) made 11 saves in goal for Lyndon, while her Mariner counterpart, Isa Thesing, made one save in picking up the win.
The Hornets return to action next Saturday when they travel to Husson University for another NAC contest. Kickoff is 1:00 pm.
