Randolph, VT - Vermont State University Lyndon scored three times in less than six minutes to cut a five-goal deficit against Vermont State University Randolph to two. However the Hornets were not able to complete the comeback, as the host Knights steadied things to come away with a 7-3 victory. Randolph evened their record at 3-3 with the win, while Lyndon remained winless in five games this season.
After a scoreless first 20 minutes, Randolph got on the board in the 21st minute with an unassisted goal from John Mather. Joey Reynolds converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute, then scored again in the 39th minute to send the home team into halftime with a 3-0 lead.
Reynolds scored again in the 65th minute, then assisted on Christian Kirk's goal in the 69th minute to give the Knights a seemingly insurmountable 5-0 lead.
However the Hornets suddenly came alive. Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) got Lyndon on the board in the 70th minute. In the 75th minute, David Gratton (Newport, VT) found Joseph Patrick Osborh (Hanover, NH) and Osborn found the net. Flores scored again less than a minute later, and suddenly Lyndon was within 5-3.
Randolph dashed hopes of a Lyndon comeback when Thomas Kurkulonis scored in the 80th minute. Mather added a goal in the 89th minute to account for the final score.
Randolph outshot Lyndon, 33-12 and earned nine corners to three for the Hornets. Lyndon goalkeeper Robert McDonald (Anrold, MD) made 12 saves in goal, while his Knight counterpart, Shane Mapes, made four stops.
Lyndon will get back into North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they host Maine Maritime Academy. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm on Varsity Field.
