Northfield, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon broke away from a halftime tie to defeat Cazenovia College, 11-6, in Sunday's North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse game, played on Norwich University's Sabine Field. The Hornets earned their first win in three NAC contests while the Wildcats remain winless in three conference matchups and four games overall on the season.
Freshman Bodhi English (Livermore, CA) fot the Hornets on the board a little over two minutes into the game, scoring an unassisted goal. Foster Smallman (Beverly, MA) followed with a goal at the 10:15 mark of the opening quarter, then Elias Libby (Rockport, ME) found English with 3:49 to go in the quarter to five the Hornets a three-goal lead. Christian Seabrook got Cazenovia on the board a minute later, and the Hornets led, 3-1, after one.
English picked up another unassisted goal 1:29 into the second quarter to build the lead back to three. Cazenovia responded with man-up goals from Griffin English and Parker Sage, then Griffin English found Marshall Withers, who scored to tie things at 4-4 with 6:18 to go before halftime. Bodhi English put Lyndon back in front with a man-up goal, his fourth tally of the half, but Sage's unassisted goal with 48 seconds left in the half sent the teams into intermission tied at 5-5.
Lyndon regained control of the game with four unanswered goals in the third quarter. Libby put the Hornets back in front when he took a pass from Smallman and scored two minutes into the quarter. Bodhi English and Smallman added a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart, then Alex Reed (Woodstock, VT) found Javen Reinhardt (Savoy, MA) for a score in the final seconds to give the Hornets a 9-5 lead heading into the final stanza.
Reed scored twice in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 11-5, Lyndon. Jeff Viviano then picked up a goal for Caxenovia to account for the final score.
Libby came within in eyelash of establishing a pair of all-time NCAA Division III single game records. He recorded 29 ground balls, the second highest totla ever in a Division III game behind only Shawn McDanel of La Roche College, who had 31 against Franciscan University in 2018. He also finished with 14 caused turnovers, second only to Nathan Batallas of Anna Maria College, who had 15 against Wheelock College in 2015. Libby also won 13 of 21 faceoffs in the game.
Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) went the distance in goal for Lyndon to earn the win. He stopped seven Cazenovia shots. Wildcat goalie Sam Goldman made 12 saves.
The Hornets outshot the Wildcats, 52-32, and had a 62-50 edge in ground balls. Cazenovia committed 38 turnovers to 32 for Lyndon.
The Hornets are scheduled to host SUNY Canton in another NAC contest next Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
