Northfield, VT - The State University of New York Polytechnic Institute used a big second quarter to build a 13-0 halftime lead on the way to a 20-5 North Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse victory on Friday afternoon. The game was played on Sabine Field at Norwich University. With the win, SUNY Poly improved to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in the NAC. Lyndon is now 0-2 overall and in conference.
After the Wildcats' Michael Baker and Luke Taylor scored first quarter goals, SUNY Poly exploded for 11 second quarter tallies to take a 13-0 lead into halftime. Play was a bit more even in the second half, as the visitors outscored the Hornets, 7-5, over the final two quarters.
11 different SUNY Poly players scored in the game, with Lyle Beeman and Brendan Rie leading the way with three goals apiece. Taylor, Christopher Naldini, Andrew Maycock, Payton Thomas, and Griffin LaFleur all scored twice. Beeman had a team leading three assists and Joshua Cargen recorded ten ground balls. Spencer Nixon added nine ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Elias Libby (Rockport, ME) paced Lyndon with a pair of goals and an assist. He also notched game highs of 11 ground balls and six caused turnovers. Bodhi English (Livermore, CA) added a goal and an assist. Alex Reed (Woodscock, VT) and Foster Smallman (Beverly, MA) each scored once for the Hornets.
Joseph VanZandt made two saves in a scoreless first half in goal for the Wildcats. He picked up the win and was relieved by Ryan Possidel and Tent Stone in the second half. Matthew McGeehan (Milford, CT) went the distance in goal for Lyndon and made 15 saves.
SUNY Poly had the better of the play most of the afternoon. The Wildcats outshot the Hornets, 54-17, and turned Lyndon over 34 times while committing 21 themselves. SUNY Poly also dominated ground balls, 64-26, and won 19 of 28 face-offs.
The Hornets will return to Norwich on Sunday afternoon when they host Cazenovia College in another NAC matchup. Game time is 4:00 pm.
