Brevard, NC - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team completed its swing through Virginia and North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets came up just short against Guilford College, falling 9-8 in a game played at Brevard College. Guilford evened their record at 3-3 on the season while Lyndon fell to 1-5.
Lyndon drew first blood in the bottom half of the first inning. TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) started things with a leadoff single. After Guilford starter Marcello Ricigliano retired the next two hitters, Dylan Wilson (Monrow, CT) lifted a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Hornets the lead.
That would be the only scoring by either team through the first three innings, as Ricigliano and Hornet starter Carlos Rodriguez (La Mirada, CA) got the best of the hitters the first time through each lineup. Guilford gon on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when Rylan Smith led off with a double and Colin Smith singled him home.
The Quakers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when Michael Sumner singled with two outs, then Isaiah Hairston homered over the right center field fence. Lyndon would push across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie things at 3-3.
Guilford appeared to break the game open in the top of the eighth inning. The Quakers played small ball and took advantage of a Hornet error to plate six runs and take a 9-3 lead. Bryce Vestal's two-out bases loaded single drove in a pair of runs and was the big blow that kep the inning going.
Lyndon would not go quietly, however, as the Hornets responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lyndon loaded the bases thanks to a pair of walks and a Dale Ostermann (Milford, DE) base hit against Guilford reliever Chase Wade. Mark Osorio (Manchester, CT) was then hit by a pitch, driving in a run, then back to back walks to Tyler Murro (Littleton, NH) and Wilson drove in two more. Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) singled in another run, and an Anthony Ness (Silver Springs, NV) sacrifice fly drove in another. When the dust had settled, the Hornets were within 9-8 through eight complete innings.
After Lyndon kept Guilford off the board in the top of the ninth inning, the Hornets had a chance to win in in the bottom half. Unfortunately for Lyndon, Ty Clark, Guilford's third pitcher of the game, set the Hornets down in order in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win and earn a save. Wade picked up the win, Jacob Wechselblatt, the second of three Lyndon pitchers, took the loss.
The Hornets are now off until Saturday, March 11th, when they will travel to Lesley University for a 12:00 noon non-conference doubleheader.
