Brevard, NC - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon baseball team struggled to get anything going on Friday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Brevard College. the host Tornados picked up a 7-1 victory in game one, then ran away with a 16-2 win in the nightcap. With the sweep Brevard improved to 6-3 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 1-4.
Game 1 - Brevard 7, NVU-Lyndon 1
The Hornets looked like they had a big inning going in the top of the first. TJ Santaw (Newport, VT) doubled leading off. Tyler Murro's (littleton, NH) two-out base hit drove in Santaw to give the Hornets the lead. Steven Friscia (Smithtown, NY) then walked and Anthony Ness (Silver Springs, NV) beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Brevard starter Trenten Anderson was able to retire Sean Cavanaugh (Londonderry, NH) to get out of the jam.
That would prove to be the extent of the Lyndon scoring, as Anderson only allowed a fifth inning Dale Ostermann (Milford, DE) infield hit and a walk and a hit batter in the sixth inning before giving way to Matt Evans, who pitched a scoreless seventh.
Meanwhile, Brevard manufactured a run in the botom of the first inning to tie things, then grabbed the lead with a three-run third. The big blow in the third was Logan Clark's RBI triple. Clark then scored on Lucas Granata's two-out base hit. The Tornados would give themselves some breathing room with three more runs in the home fifth, keyed by triples from Granata and Tristan Robinson.
Anderson earned the win, striking out six and walking only one in his six innings of work. Ryan Alt (Poultney, VT) started and took the loss for Lyndon.
Game 2 - Brevard 16, NVU-Lyndon 2
The nightcap was all Brevard. The hosts scored twice in the home first inning, then followed up with four runs in the second inning, four more in the fourth, and six in the fifth. Eight different Tornados had a base hit, with Blake Burchett and Granata both tripling. Meanwhile, Lyndon was only able to scratch across one run in the top of the second on back to back base hits from Santaw and Ostermann and another run in the fourth when Alt led off with a double and EJ Camden (Corona, CA) drove him in.
Bryce Bowers scattered six hits and struck out six over six innings to earn the win. Lyndon starter Storm Carlisle (Lewes, DE) absorbed the loss.
The Hornets complete their southern swing on Saturday afternoon when they play Guilford College at Brevard. The start time for that game has been moved up to 12:00 noon.
