Lyndonville, VT - Plattsburgh State University broke open a one-point game with an 11-0 run in the later stages of the first half of Sunday's men's basketball game at Vermont State University Lyndon. The Cardinals would come away with the 102-75 victory to improve to 2-3 on the season. The Hornets remain winless in six outings.
After early baskets from Lyndon's Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) and Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) gave the Hornets a 4-2 lead, Plattsburgh responded with a 10-1 run to take a 12-5 advantage. The Hornets chipped away and tied things at 14-14 when Gonyea found Aiden Trapani (Deltona, FL) for a layup.
The teams would battle on even terms over the next several minutes, with Isaac Davis (Barre, VT) putting Lyndon back in front, 19-18, at the 10:12 mark. Sasha Vidrini's three-pointer on Plattsburgh's next possession gave the lead back to the Cardinals but Lyndon remained within one following a Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) layup with 8:28 to go in the half.
Plattsburgh's Dylan Trombley drained a three-pointer on the next trip down the court, igniting an 11-0 Cardinal run over the next minute and a half which built the lead to 34-22 with just under seven minutes to go in the opening half. Plattsburgh then capitalized on several Hornet miscues to extend their advantage to 54-33 at intermission.
The Cardinals were able to keep the Hornets at bay throughout the second half, as Lyndon never got closer than within 18 points after the break.
Kevin Tabb led Plattsburgh with a game high 31 points and six steals. Franklin Infante added 17 points and Willard Anderson Jr. came off the bench to score ten points. Tim Thomas recorded game highs of 14 rebounds and five assists.
Gonyea paced the Hornets with 25 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Owen Traynor (Rutland, VT) was the only other Hornet in double figures, scoring 13 points on 5/8 shooting, including 3/4 from beyond the three point arc. Olsen and Trapani also notched four assists each.
The differences in the game were points off turnovers and second chance points. Plattsburgh converted 28 Lyndon give aways into 32 points. The Cardinals also scored 19 second chance points, thanks to a 59-41 rebounding advantage.
The Hornets will travel to Norwich University on Tuesday evening for another non-conference game. Tip-off time is 5:30 pm.
