Clinton, NY - Playing without several players, the Vermont State University Lyndon men's basketball team was no match for the State University of New York at Morrisville on Sunday afternoon. The deep and talented Mustangs prevailed, 108-48, in the consolation game of the Hamilton College Thanksgiving Tournament. Morrisville evened their record at 2-2 on the season, while Lyndon remained winless in five outings.
Morrisville scored the first six points of the game and built a 33-17 advantage midway through the opening half. The Hornets got back within ten points following six straight points from Isaac Davis (Barre, VT), but the Mustangs broke the game open by outscoring the Hornets 25-8 over the final 8:21 of the opening half. Both teams substituted liberally in the second half, as Morrisville continued to pull away.
Kareem Sanders led a balanced Morrisville attack with 13 points and seven rebounds. Daimarr Miller added 11 points and Jakhi Lucas chipped in with eight points and five assists.
Davis was a bright spot for the Hornets. He was the only Hornet in double figures, finishing with 14 points on seven of ten shooting. Matt Doyle (Whitesboro, NY) pulled down a team high seven rebounds and Chad Martin (Henniker, NH) recorded a pair of assists.
Despite missing the game due to injury, the Hornets' Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) was named to the All-Tournament Team on the strength of his 27-point outing against Neumann University in Friday night's first round game. He was joined by Sanders, Garret Keyhani of Hamilton, and Jalen Vaughns and Kyle Thompson of Neumann. Hamilton defeated Neumann, 83-65, in Sunday's championship game. The Continentals' Teja Singh was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
Lyndon will return to action next Sunday afternoon when they host Plattsburgh State University in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm in Stannard Gymnasium.
