Lyndonville, VT - The Vermont State University Lyndon women's soccer team battled with the State University of New York at Delhi for 90 minutes in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference crossover game. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they were unable to find the back of the net, as the Broncos made two early goals stand up for a 2-0 victory. Delhi, leaders of the NAC's West Division, improved to 7-1-2 on the season and 3-0-2 in conference play. Lyndon remained winless in eight games, including four conference outings.
Delhi struck early when Alanna Ruchar took a pass from Kayla Beers and found the back of the net less than three minutes into the game. The Broncos were then beneficiaries of an own goal in the sixth minute to go in front 2-0.
That would turn out to be all of the scoring. Delhi controlled play, holding a 28-2 shot advantage and earning 13 corner kicks to none for Lyndon. The Hornets were able to keep the Broncos off of the scoreboard, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Karly Cordwell's (Milan, NH) eight saves and some solid play on the back from Malia Wilson (East Hartford, CT) and Victoria Fitih (Madison, TN).
Lyndon was unable to get much gong on offense, as Alexis Leroy (Dunedin, FL) and Marisa Schlegel (Nampa, ID) managed the only shots on goal. Delhi keeper Abigail Allen was able to turn away both efforts. Allen and Julia Ruppert each played a half to earn the combined shutout.
The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host another NAC crossover, this time against the State University of New York at Cobleskill. Kickoff is set for noon on Varsity Field.
