Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornet men lose heartbreaker at VTSU Johnson

Johnson, VT - Vermont State University Johnson rallied twice from a goal down, then netted the game winner in the 88th minute to snatch victory from Vermont State University Lyndon, 3-2, in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game.  The win was Johnson's first in ten games this season.  Lyndon remains winless in eight starts.

Neither team was able to break into the scoring column in the early going.  The Hornets had a great opportunity to break the ice in the 34th minute, but Joseph Patrick Osborn's (Hanover, NH) shot on a free lick hit the crossbar and bounced out.  Lyndon did break through in the 42nd minute when Johnson committed a foul in the box and Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) fired a penalty kick past Johnson goalkeeper Dylan Haskins and into the lower right corner of the net.  The Hornets would take their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

The Hornets continued to nurse the one-goal advantage throughout much of the second half.  Then in the 70th minute, Johnson's Richard Schieferstein got behind the Lyndon defense and chipped the ball over Hornet keeper Robert McDonald (Arnold, MD) and into the net to tie the game.

Lyndon regained the lead in the 75th minute when David Gratton (Newport, VT) delivered a beautiful through ball to Flores and Flores fired a shot past Haskins.  However, Johnson was again able to tie things.  In the 82nd minute, Simon Benitez found himself in the right place at the right time when a ball rebounded to him and he poked it in to make it 2-2.

McDonald was able to turn away four Badger shots on goal in the next four minutes.  However in the 88th minute, Lyndon was called for a foul outside the top of the box.  Johnson's Logan Ingalls lofted the free kick past the Hornet wall and into the upper corner of the net to give the Badgers the lead and the win.

Lyndon returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host the State University of New York at Delhi in a North Atlantic Conference crossover matchup,  Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
