Game Recap: Volleyball |

Hornet volleyball drops a pair to UMaine-Presque Isle on Dig Pink Day

Lyndonville, VT - The University of Maine at Presque Isle defeated Vermont State University Lyndon in both ends of today's volleyball doubleheader.  The Owls prevailed in the both opener, a North Atlantic Conference matchup, and the nightcap, a non-conference affair, by 3-0 margins.  With the sweep, UMPI improved to 9-11 on the season and 5-4 in conference play while Lyndon fell to 2-18 overall and 2-7 in the NAC.

Match 1 - UMaine-Presque Isle 3, VTSU Lyndon 0 (25-5, 25-11, 25-5)

The Owls jumped out to a 17-1 lead in the first set and never looked back.  Alondra Lopez-Aquino had 12 kills to lead UMPI.  Setter Alexis Engel recorded 26 assists and Brianna Bolhuis added 19 digs.

Charlotte Morris (Middletown, DE) had three kills for Lyndon.  Briona Graham (Port Arthur, TX) had a pair of assists and Gray Hoselton (Fargo, ND) led the Hornets with ten digs.

Match 2 - UMaine-Presque Isle 3, VTSU Lyndon (25-23, 25-16, 25-10)

The Hornets rallied from an eight-point deficit to pull within 24-23 in the first set.  Lyndon appeared to tie things up with a service ace on the next point, but the initial call was overruled, giving the Owls the set.  UMPI was able to hold off the Hornets in the next two sets to close out the match.

Lopez-Aquino again paced the Owls with seven kills.  Engel recorded 23 assists and Bolhuis and Kylee Blazick finished with 24 and 20 digs respectively.

Morris led Lyndon with four kills and three assists.  Hoselton added three kills while Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY), Graham, and Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) finished with 12, 11, and 10 digs respectively.

Saturday's games were Lyndon volleyball's annual Dig Pink games, established to raise awareness of the fight against cancer and benefit the Sideout Foundation.  Hornet players wore pink warmup shirts and decorated Stannard Gymnasium for the event.

Lyndon will wrap up its season on Sunday afternoon when they host NAC East Division leading and six-time defending NAC champion Maine Maritime Academy.  Match time is 12:00 pm.
