Castine, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon led by 12 points early in the second half of Saturday's men's college basketball game at Maine Maritime Academy. The Hornets ere unable to hang on, however, as the Mariners rallied late to escape with an 86-85 victory. MMA improved to 8-12 on the season and 4-7 in NAC play while Lyndon had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-14 overall and 3-6 in conference.
Lyndon led throughout the second half until MMA's Isaiah Oquendo was fouled shooting a three-pointer and sank all three free throws to tie the game at 81-81 with 2:34 to go. Peyton Olsen (Middleburgh, NY) knocked down a jumper to put the Hornets back in front with 1:29 left. Curt Heinz would convert a pair of free throws to tie things again. After the Hornets came up empty on their next possession, two more Heinz free throws gave the Mariners their first lead of the second half with 36 seconds to go. After another empty Lyndon trip, Heinz converted another free throw to make it a three-point game. Olsen's layup with 1.6 seconds remaining accounted for the final score.
Carter Rubin paced MMA with 24 points. Heinz finished with 19 points and nine rebounds and Oquendo also reached double figures with 16 points. For Lyndon, Olsen tallied a game high 25 points and Mondwell Bukle (Pyeongtaek, South Korea) added 22 points. Gregory Gonyea Jr. (Dolgeville, NY) chipped in with 13 points and Justin Phillips (Phoenix, AZ) tallid nine points and a game high 11 rebounds.
Fo the game, MMA was 21/50 (42%) from the floor, including 11/23 (47.8%) from behind the arc. Lyndon was 35/71 (49.3%) from the floor and 9/27 ()33.3%) from distance. The difference in the game came at the free throw line, where Maine Maritime converted 33 of 41 attempts, outscoring Lyndon by 27 points, as the Hornets were only 6/8. The officials whistled Lyndon for 25 fouls to only 11 fouls called against Maine Maritime.
Lyndon will return to Maine next weekend for two more NAC contests at Husson University. The Hornets and Eagles will tip-off on Friday evening at 7:30 pm, and again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
