Farmington, ME - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon didn't take their first lead until 8:43 remained in Tuesday's North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game. The Hornets then used a 14-0 run to put away the University of Maine at Farmington and earn a 40-28 victory. With the win, the Hornets evened their overall record at 6-6 and improve their conference record to 2-1. UMF fell to 1-11 on the season. The Beavers are winless in four conference starts.
UMF's Victoria Garand scored three of the game's first four baskets as the host Beavers quickly jumped to an 8-0 lead. A Sage Smith (Colebrook, NH) jumper, a Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) layup, and a Kiara Mack (Winooski, VT) free throw cut the UMF lead to 8-5 after one quarter.
The lid continued to be on the basket for both teams throughout the middle two quarters, as UMF held a 14-10 advantage at the half and a 22-21 lead through three.
Jaycie Stevens scored inside on UMF's first possession of the final quarter to give the hosts a 24-21 lead. At that point the Hornets came alive at both ends of the floor. Kerigan Disorda (Benson, VT) converted a pair of free throws to cut the lead to one point, then Makayla Phoenix (Houston, TX) scored inside to give Lyndon their first lead of the game. That ignited a 14-0 Hornet run which extended the Lyndon lead to 35-24 with 4:47 to go. The Hornets would cruise to the win from there.
Smith was the only player on either team to reach double figures, as she finished with 13 points and added eight rebounds. Fortin posted team highs of 11 rebounds and three assists to go with her eight points. Grace Dwyer was the Beavers' leading scorer with nine points. Ruby McMinis grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Hornets travel to Upstate New York for a pair of crossover contests this weekend. Lyndon will play the State Unioversity of New York at Delhi on Friday afternoon at 3:30, before taking on the State University of New York at Cobleskill on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm.
