Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and Rivier University squared off on a rainy Labor Day afternoon.  It was the visiting Raiders who overcame both the Hornets and the elements to come away with a 4-0 non-conference men's soccer victory.  The game was the season opener for Rivier, while Lyndon fell to 0-1-1 on the season.
The game was closely contested in the early going, until Rivier broke through in the 26th minute.  The Raiders' Ryan Hadouche took advantage of a Hornet giveaway in front of the goal and fired a shot past Lyndon goalkeeper Jakob Cannon (Monument, CO).
Less than six minutes later Rivier's Sidney Hartmann lofted a shot from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net to make it 2-0.  The Raiders scored again in the 38th minute when Hayden Bilodeau took a long cross from Jason Harlow and beat Cannon to the lower left corner.
Rhe Raiders added an insurance goal in the 79th minute when Hartmann headed in a cross from Bilodeau.
Rivier had the better of play throughout, as they out shot the Hornets, 31-8, and had a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks.  Rivier goalkeepers Dominic Cunha and Noah Horn combined for a clean sheet without having to make a save.  Cannon, in his first collegiate appearance, made 12 saves in the Lyndon goal.
The Hornets wil return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Thomas College for their North Atlantic Conference opener.  Kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.
