Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon scored twice in the game's final 24 minutes to come away with a 2-2 draw with Paul Smith's College in Saturday's women's college soccer game. The contest was Lyndon's season opener, while Paul Smith's moves to 1-0-1 on the campaign.
Hayleigh Gates gave the Bobcats the early lead when she scored an unassisted goal in the tenth minute. The Bobcats controlled play throughout the first half, owning a 14-2 advantage, but Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) stopped seven Paul Smith's shots in the opening half to keep it a one-goal game at intermission.
In the 56th minute Gates made it 2-0, Bobcats, when she scored on a rebound of a Samantha Severing shot.
Lyndon got on the scoreboard in the 67th minute, as Riann Fortin (Derby, VT), fired a shot past Paul Smith's keeper Anna Thrasher and into the upper corner of the net past. With time winding down, the Hornets finally got the equalizer in the 86th minute. Fortin crossed the ball to Maachah Krull, who slipped a shot past ?Thrasher and into the lower left corner of the net. That would be the way it ended.
Paul Smith's outshot Lyndon, 25-5, and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cordwell made 11 saves in goal, while Thrasher made two stops.
The Hornets will take to the road on Monday afternoon when they travel to Medford, MA, to take on Fisher College in another non-conference contest. The Labor Day matchup will kick off at 1:00 pm.
