Lyndonville, VT - In a game where scoring chances were hard to come by, neither Northern Vermont University-Lyndon nor Paul Smith's College were able to break through in Saturday afternoon's non-conference men's soccer game. The end result was a scoreless tie in what was the Hornets' season opener. The Bobcats move to 1-0-1 on the season.
Paul Smith's got the better of the play for a good deal of the first half. The Bobcats were offside on a potential go ahead goal midway through the stanza. Lyndon's best scoring opportunity came in the final minutes, when Jahvon Burch (Brooklyn, NY) took a cross in traffic to the right of the goal but was unable to get everything on his shot. Paul Smith's outshot Lyndon 10-4 in the half, as Hornet goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) made five saves to keep Lyndon even.
The second half was played on more even terms, but neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Paul Smith's ended up outshooting Lyndon, 18-9, for the match. Roy made nine saves in the Hornet goal, while his Bobcat counterpart, Steven Donnelly, made three saves to match Roy's clean sheet.
The Hornets will return to the pitch on Monday afternoon for a Labor Day matinee against Rivier University. Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
