Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University sister campuses Lyndon and Johnson squared off in a North Atlantic Conference crossover matchup on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the homestanding Hornets, the visiting Badgers emerged with a 3-1 victory. Johnson improved to 2-5-1 on the season and 1-3 in the NAC. Lyndon fell to 1-6-1 overall and 0-4 in conference.
Johnson got on the scoreboard early when the Hornets were called for a foul in the box in the seventh minute. Wyatt Moberg converted the ensuing penalty kick to make it 1-0, Badgers. Johnson added to the lead in the 38th minute. Lucas Gehring ran onto a long ball from Elliud Villarreal. Villarreal delivered a cross that Merrick Meetze headed past Lyndon goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT). The Badgers would take the 2-0 lead into intermission.
The Hornets got back within one goal in the 54th minute. Garrick Webster (Terryville, CT) delivered a long free kick that Joseph Patrick Osborn (Hanover, NH) headed past Johnson keeper Spencer Tergeglou and into the net. The Badgers built their lead back to two in the 71st minute when Gehring hamered home a Meetze cross.
Johnson outshot Lyndon, 28-8, and controlled 58% of the possession time. The Badgers also earned seven corner kicks, while the Hornets didn't have any corners. Patrick Austin started in goal for Johnson and finished with a pair of saves. He was releived by Tergeglou at the start of the second half, but returned to the goal in the 60th minute. Roy made 10 saves in goal for the Hornets.
Lyndon will return to action next Saturday when they host the University of Maine at Farmington at 1:00 pm.
