Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team made an early goal stand up thanks to some strong defensive play and came away with their first win of the season, a 1-0 North Atlantic Conference crossover triumph over SUNY Canton on Homecoming and Family Weekend. The Hornets improved to 1-5-1 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The win was also the program's first NAC win since October 3rd of 2019, when they posted a 3-0 win over Northern Vermont University-Johnson. Canton fell to 0-5-1 on the campaign and 0-1-1 in the NAC.
Lyndon scored the game's only goal in the 11th minute, when Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) made a run up the left side. Fortin then delivered a beautiful cross to Alyssa Fryman (Lancaster, NH), and Fryman fired a shot past Roo goalkeeper Skylar Williams.
Scoring opportunities were difficult to come by for both teams the rest of the way. The Hornet back line of Malia Wilson (East Hartford, CT), Macy Vogan (Walden, VT), Johannah Parker (Grafton, VT), and Emma Renaudette (Lyndon, VT) kept Canton contained and bottled up in front of Lyndon goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH). Canton's best chance for the equalizer came in the 54th minute, when a shot from the Roos' Caitlin Douglas banged off the post.
For the contest, Canton outshot Lyndon, 11-8, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Possession was nearly even, with the Roos holding a 51%-49% advantage. Cordwell was called on to make four saves on her way to the win and the clean sheet. Williams also made four stops in the Canton net.
The Hornets will travel to Vermont Technical College on Thursday for a non-conference game that was rescheduled from September 13th. Kickoff in Randolph is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
