Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hornet men can't break through against SUNY Canton

Lyndonville, VT - SUNY Canton scored once in each half to spoil Homecoming and Family Weekend for the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon.  The visiting Kangaroos came away with the 2-0 North Atlantic Conference crossover victory and improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-0 in NAC play.  The Hornets fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-3 in conference.

Canton controlled much of the early going, but the Hornets produced a great scoring opportunity in the 14th minute.  However Canton goalkeeper Owen Kwong turned away Lyndon's Gilbert Flores (Winstead, CT) to keep the game scoreless.  In the 27th minute, the Roos' Agustin Nunez slipped a pass to Martin Torales in front of the Hornet goal, and Morales poked it by Hornet keeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) to give Canton the 1-0 lead.  Flores had a great chance to get the equalizer in the 29th minute, but he was again denied by Kwong.

Canton added an insurance goal in the 75th minute when they capitalized on a Hornet giveaway in their own end.  Nunez then beat his defender and fired a shot past Roy into the lower corner of the goal.  That's the way the game would end, as Canton kept Lyndon stymied on offense, limiting the Hornets to only one second half shot.

Canton outshot Lyndon, 33-5, and possessed the ball for 64% of the game, with 75% of their possession time coming in the attacking end.  The Roos generated seven corner kicsk to three for the Hornets.  Kwong shared the shutout with Ronald Zavala, who came on in relief for the final 18 minutes.  Roy went the distance in goal for Lyndon and finished wiht ten saves on 12 shots on goal.

The Hornets return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Northern Vermont University-Johnson in another NAC crossover contest.  Kickoff on Varsity Field is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
