New London, CT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and Mitchell College battled to a scoreless tie for over 86 minutes in Wednesday's women's soccer game. Unfortunately for the Hornets, Mitchell broke through in the 87th minute to come away with a 1-0 non-conference victory. Mitchell improved to 2-3-1 on the season, while Lyndon fell to 0-5-1.
Despite being outshot 7-1 in the first half, Lyndon generated perhaps the best scoring opportunity of the opening stanza in the 16th minute. The Hornets' Rachel Palladino (Manlius, NY) cam e up with a takeaway in Mitchell's end and fired a shot from just outside the box, but Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry came up with the save. Meanwhile, Hornet keeper Karly Cordwell (Mil;an, NH) stopped four Mitchell shots on goal to keep the game scoreless at intermission.
Play started to shift Lyndon's way as the second half unfolded. The Hornets had eight shots to six for the Mariners, with Lyndon's Piper Mattsson (Northfield, VT) had a pair of good scoring chances in the 56th and 59th minute, and Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) produced a pair of late chances that Landry was able to stop.
With less than four minutes to go, Mitchell won a midfield battle for possession, then Andee Shaffran went on a long run with the ball up the left wing. Shaffran then crossed the ball through the box, where Cassandra Roman poked in the game winner.
Cordwell and Landry both finished with seven saves. Mitchell earned four corner kicks in the game, while Lyndon generated a pair of corners.
The Hornets will return home on Saturday afternoon for a North Atlantic Conference crossover game against SUNY Canton. The Homecoming and Family Weekend contest is scheduled to kickoff at 1:30 pm on Varsity Field.
