Castine, ME - In a game where scoring opportunities were hard to come by, Maine Maritime Academy was able to break through for a pair of goals pick up a win over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in North Atlantic Conference women's soccer on Saturday. The Mariners evened their overall record at 2-2-1 and moved to 2-0 in NAC play. The Hornets fell to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard throughout most of the first half. Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) had Lyndon's only shot of the first half. Meanwhile Hornet goalkeeper Karly Cordwell (Milan, NH) turned away a pair of good Mariner scoring opportunities in the early going.
Maine Maritime broke through in the 36th minute when Suzanne Woolridge delivered a through ball to Emma White, and White was able to find the back of the net. The Mariners would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Maine Maritime stuck quickly after intermission. In the 47th minute, White hit the post with a shot and Kelsey Bern poked in the rebound, extending the MMA lead to 2-0. That would turn out to be the final goal of the game, as Lyndon was unable to put a ball on goal in the second half.
Maine Maritime possessed the ball 62% of the game and outshot Lyndon, 19-2. Cordwell made six saves in the Lyndon goal. MMA's Bess MacAruther recorded a clean sheet and only faced one shot.
Lyndon returns home on Monday afternoon when they host Plymouth State University on Varsity Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
