Lyndonville, VT - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon broke a scoreless tie with a pair of second half goals to come away with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Vermont Technical College on Wednesday afternoon. Lyndon improved to 1-2-1 on the season, while Vermont Tech fell to 0-5.
The Hornets had much the better of play in the opening half, but were unable to break through. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 23rd minute when Joseph Patrick Osborn's (Hanover, NH) header bounced off the goalpost. The Hornets outshot the Knights, 9-1, in the openign half, but the two teams headed into halftime scoreless.
Lyndon continued to control play in the second half, and when Vermont Tech was called for a foul in the box in the 67th minute, Osborn blasted the penalty kick past Knight goalkeeper Thomas Ferguson to give the Hornets the lead.
The Hornets extended their lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. Jacob Baesemann's (St. Johnsbury, VT) corner kick bounced around in front of the goal and a shot from Jakob Cannon (Monument, CO) rebounded right to Koltin Leduc (Tunbridge, VT), who poked it into top top of the net.
That was all the Hornets needed, as Lyndon goalkeeper Brett Roy (Newport, VT) recorded the clean sheet while making four saves. Ferguson made five stops in the Vermotn Tech net, as Lyndon outshot VTC, 25-9 and earned 10 corners to none for the Knights. The Hornets posessed the ball for a commanding 71% of the game.
The Hornets get back into North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Castine, ME, to play Maine Maritime Academy. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
