Box Score 2 Revere, MA - Northern Vermont University-Lyndon was defeated by Lesley University by identical 10-2 scores in both ends of Sunday's non-conference softball doubleheader. With the sweep, the Lynx improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 5-7.
Game 1 - Lesley 10, NVU-Lyndon 2
Neither team was able to manufacture a run over the first two and a half innings, but the host Lynx, aided by four Hornet errors, erupted for eight runs, seven of which were unearned, in their half of the third. Each team added two unearned runs in the fifth inning to account for the final score.
Ilana Zack had a big game at the plate to lead Lesley. She went three for four with a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Mahlia Medina had two hits, a home run and a double, and drove in three runs. Antonia Kieran also had a pair of hits for the Lynx. Seairra Anderson's (Somersworth, NH) first inning double and Saleena Porter's (St. Johnsbury, VT) fifth inning single were the only Hornet hits of the game.
Lesley starter Samantha Mecklenburg didn't allow an earned run in picking up the complete game victory. Emily Anderson (Levittown, NY) also went the distance for the Hornets, allowing only one earned run and taking the loss.
Game 2 - Lesley 10, NVU-Lyndon 2
Lyndon umped in front on Claudia Knapp's (Howell, NJ) two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Lesley answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. The Lynx took the lead on Jordan Day's two-run homer in their half of the third inning. Medina then delivered a three-run shot in the fourth inning, and the Lynx put the game away with three more runs in their half of the fifth.
Medina and Zack had two hits apiece for Lesley. Day scored three times and Antonia Kieran drove in a pair of runs. Knapp, Amber Everett (Morrisville, VT), and Riann Fortin (Derby, VT) had the only hits for the Hornets.
Day pitched a complete game to earn the win for Lesley. She struck out seven without walking a batter. Hornet starter Victoria Valentine (Lyndon, VT) took the loss, allowing ten runs and eight hits, while striking out two.
The Hornets will open North Atlantic Conference play next Saturday when they travel to Husson University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
